About the speaker
Heather Mitchell is an independent contractor, teaching English full time through several online educational platforms. She travels to the other side of the world via the internet every day to teach young English Language Learners how to speak, read, and listen in English. Currently she contracts with 3 companies based in China. Each company hosts an online classroom where Heather meets with her students. Students are based in China, Japan, and South Korea. She has coached several teachers through the hiring process for multiple online ESL platforms.
Heather began teaching ESL online in the summer of 2017. Originally trained as a music teacher, she gave up her teaching career shortly after it started to be a stay at home mom and military wife. Her family moved 12 times in a matter of a few years, making a career next to impossible. After spending over 15 years homeschooling her 5 children and being a military wife, life slowed down when her husband retired from the military. Her children would soon be adults, and she wanted to have something that was hers. A friend posted about her experience teaching ESL online which piqued Heather’s interest. Over two years later, she is still enjoying every minute in the classroom and she has built relationships with many of her students and their families.
Heather is an active wife, mom, and grandmother. She is homeschooling her youngest child. Some of her hobbies include traveling, cooking, reading, and hiking. Her favorite author is Margaret Atwood. She lives in Dayton, OH with her husband, two college students, 11-year old daughter, 3 cats, and 2 dogs.
